IWEI and Mercy Corps Empower Women and Girls in Kano State on Menstrual Hygiene Day in Kano State.Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative, (IWEI), in collaboration with Mercy Corps under the Girls Improving Resilience Through Livelihood and Health (GIRL-H) project marked Menstrual Hygiene Day with over 100 women, girls and mothers in Ungogo local government area of Kano State.The Village Head was also in attendance.
The event addressed the challenges girls and women face due to a lack of menstrual hygiene awareness and access to sanitary products. Participants learned about the importance of menstrual hygiene, including proper sanitation practices and the dangers of using unhygienic materials.
Aisha Musa Idris, from the Kadawa community, highlighted how poverty forces girls and women to resort to unsafe practices, increasing their risk of infections. Fatima, another participant, shared how the program opened her eyes to the health risks of using expired or damaged pads.
Asma’u Zakari Ya’u, the GIRL-H Project Officer for Ungogo, emphasized the timeliness of the training, considering the rising prevalence of reproductive and urinary tract infections among adolescent girls and women in northern Nigeria.
Recognizing that menstruation is a natural process, IWEI goes beyond awareness campaigns. The organization equips young women and girls from underprivileged backgrounds with the tools they need to manage their periods safely and hygienically. This includes training on making reusable sanitary pads from affordable, high-quality materials, promoting healthy practices, and providing access to vocational skills training to empower them towards financial independence.
